1)
Alachua County Jail hacker outsmarted system
“just to prove” he could
Justin
Lee Williams and Shawn Freeland posed with fake identities to trick the Sumner
County Sheriff’s Office into helping Williams escape.
The
computer systems, and the employees in the sheriff’s office, need to be updated
and trained to avoid such situations in the future.
The
Sumner County Sheriff’s Office has the problem.
2) City Commission repeals plastic ban,
raises GRU rates
An
ordinance for the ban of single use plastic bags and Styrofoam containers has
been repealed. Also, utilities bills will be going up in Gainesville.
There
will be no limitations of single use plastic bags and plastic derivatives in
the city.
The
environment and society as a whole must carry this burden into the future if it
isn’t fixed.
3) Alachua County Jail detention officer
arrested following battery accusations against employee
A
detention officer abused a girl he was dating and is now on administrative
leave.
The
problem is with society and how domestic violence is so ubiquitous in this
country.
Society
is affected by this problem more than anything. We should be educating children
on how to grow up and avoid using violence to solve problems.
4) UF student organizations hold Dorian
donation drives
Students
organize a donation drive for hurricane relief in the Bahamas.
The
Bahamas was ravaged by hurricane Dorian. People have been dislocated from
destroyed homes, and people have also been injured and need relief.
This
problem affects the people of the Bahamas.
5) UF to add external email banner to
protect students and faculty
They
are placing a warning on emails originating outside of UF in emails to help
protect against phishing and other dangerous sites.
There
is a strong cyber security issue at the university. Phishing and viruses
continues to be a major talking point amongst the school’s administration.
This
problem affects the students at UF more than anything.
Great job of finding interesting local opportunities in the local newspaper, as well as clearly identifying the problem and those affected by the problem. It is no surprise that with the recent passing of Dorian, that the hurricane was discussed in many newspapers, as I also included an article regarding the hurricane. Though, with your post, it was interesting to read about how UF students were able to organize a donation relief for The Bahamas, who were definitely affected by the hurricane. It's amazing to see several student organizations come together for a good cause.
ReplyDeleteHey Mitch,
ReplyDeleteI found your post very well made and your articles were very informative and interesting. I really liked the first article where the hacker outsmarted the system just to prove he could, I found that very amusing. I also liked the article about the plastic band, and found the information very useful, especially the part about utilities bills going up.
Hi Mitch,
ReplyDeleteYou found very interesting articles. The Alachua County jail hacker story was very interesting because it was a big wake up call to the jail that they need to update their computer systems and be more aware. I see that it is also a problem for UF. In general, hackers are just getting smarter, so every institute needs to outsmart them.
These are great finds in the local newspaper. The recent disaster known as Hurricane Dorian may not have hit us, but did leave devastating effects on the people in the Bahamas so I don't find it surprising that there are many efforts to help relieve and aid the Bahamas. I especially liked how the students of UF are organizing donation relief for the Bahamas because it means we are making an effort to mend wounds not for ourselves but the people around us.
